The Sabarmati Report Movie Plot

“The Sabarmati Report” is a film set during the events of February 27, 2002, on the Sabarmati Express. It tells a story inspired by history, focusing on human emotions, courage, and strength during difficult times.

Background

On February 27, 2002, 1,700 people, including pilgrims and karsevaks, were returning from Ayodhya. They had participated in a ceremony called the Purnahuti Maha Yagna. The Sabarmati Express was four hours late when it arrived at Godhra Junction railway station. As the train started to leave the platform, someone pulled the emergency chain, causing it to stop near the signal point. At this point, vigilantes attacked the train.

Around 2,000 people attacked the train, starting with throwing stones. They then set fire to four train coaches. Unfortunately, 59 people, including 27 women and 10 children, were trapped inside and died in the fire. Another 48 people were injured.

Some people believe that this attack was a response to the 2002 Gujarat riots, which happened in Godhra and other parts of Gujarat. These riots resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 people, left thousands homeless, and caused property damage worth hundreds of crores.

In 2003, the Concerned Citizens Tribunal reported that the fire was an accident. When Lalu Prasad Yadav became the railway minister in 2004, he asked former Supreme Court Justice Umesh Chandra Banerjee to investigate the incident. Banerjee submitted an interim report saying the fire was accidental.

However, the Nanavati-Mehta Commission released Part 1 of its report in September 2008, suggesting that the burning of the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station was a planned conspiracy.
